Spurs Extinguish Suns in Austin, Extend Win Streak to Seven
AUSTIN, TX – The San Antonio Spurs showed no signs of “All-Star break rust” on Thursday night, dominating the Phoenix Suns 121-94 at the Moody Center. The victory extends San Antonio’s winning streak to seven games and solidifies their position as a heavyweight contender in the Western Conference.
With the win, the Spurs improve to 39-16, maintaining a firm grip on second place in the West, trailing only the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Castle and Wembanyama Lead the Charge
Rookie sensation Stephon Castle continued his push for back-to-back Rookie of the Year honors for the franchise. Castle was the engine for the Spurs, scoring a team-high 20 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting. He added 4 assists and 3 steals, while his relentless defense on Devin Booker helped set the tone early.
Victor Wembanyama provided his usual “Atomic Kaiju” impact, finishing with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Wembanyama’s presence inside was the primary reason the Spurs won the points-in-the-paint battle 48-36, effectively neutralizing the Suns’ rim attack.
Depth and Dominance
The Spurs’ bench continues to be one of the deepest in the league. Dylan Harper provided a massive spark with 17 points, while Luke Kornet stepped up in limited minutes with 10 points and 9 rebounds. De’Aaron Fox, who has been a steadying veteran hand since his arrival, chipped in 15 points and 8 assists to keep the offense humming.
The game was largely decided in the second quarter, where a 13-0 San Antonio run—fueled by 3-pointers from Julian Champagnie and a three-point play by Harrison Barnes—blew the game open.
Notes from the Sideline
-
Phoenix Struggles: The Suns (32-24) were hampered by the early exit of Devin Booker, who played only nine minutes before leaving with right hip soreness. They were also missing Grayson Allen (ankle) and Dillon Brooks (suspension).
-
Austin Series: This was the first of two games in the “I-35 Series” at the Moody Center. The Spurs have made the Austin market a key part of their regional expansion strategy.
-
Roster Watch: Veteran center Mason Plumlee remained out for reconditioning but is expected to be available soon. Lindy Waters III (knee) also remained sidelined.
What’s Next?
The Spurs will look to make it eight in a row when they face the Sacramento Kings this Saturday, February 21, in Austin. Given the Kings’ recent struggles, the Spurs are heavily favored to keep their historic run alive as they head toward the final stretch of the regular season.
