REPORT: How Minnesota Vikings Plan to Foster J.J. McCarthy’s Development Behind Sam Darnold…

According to a report, despite trading up in the 2024 NFL Draft to secure J.J. McCarthy as their quarterback of the future, the Minnesota Vikings intend to have him sit behind Sam Darnold, whom they signed for a one-year deal, at least initially.

General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah emphasized the importance of not rushing McCarthy’s development and prioritizing what’s best for the team in the short or long term.

McCarthy gained attention during Michigan’s recent success, boasting impressive stats in the 2023 season.

However, the Vikings aim to follow a strategy seen with other successful quarterbacks, allowing McCarthy to learn from Darnold and minimizing early rookie mistakes.

Although McCarthy will likely start training camp as Darnold’s understudy, the plan is for him to take over the starting role in the 2025-26 season, or possibly sooner if Darnold doesn’t meet expectations as Kirk Cousins’ immediate replacement.
