Mike Tomlin’s Interest in Justin Fields Sparks Speculation Amidst Coaching Changes and Steelers’ Quarterback Dilemma…

In Monday’s edition of “First Call,” discussions about the possibility of the Pittsburgh Steelers acquiring Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields have sparked new interest. Additionally, there is coaching news related to the Steelers, with an ex-Steeler retiring and challenges for the Penguins in the Metropolitan Division.

The Steelers recently released quarterback Mitch Trubisky, prompting speculation about their plans for a notable quarterback acquisition.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, appearing on the “Pat McAfee Show,” indicated that the Steelers are expected to make a move for a quarterback, mentioning possibilities like Ryan Tannehill, Russell Wilson, or Justin Fields.

Notably, Schefter mentioned that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is a significant admirer of Justin Fields. However, he also noted Tomlin’s wife’s affinity for Los Angeles, leading to conjecture about Tomlin’s future in Pittsburgh after the 2023 season.

Speculation about Fields joining the Steelers has been ongoing, but questions arise about the team’s commitment to bringing in a quarterback who could pose legitimate competition for Kenny Pickett. Some suggest retaining Mason Rudolph instead of letting him enter free agency if a strong competitor is what the team desires.

However, concerns exist about starting Rudolph from day one of training camp due to potential backlash from wide receivers, local fans, and the media. Additionally, the Steelers may not want to engage in a bidding war for Rudolph, considering him a short-term starter at best.

The prevailing belief is that the Steelers will bring in a clear No. 2 quarterback, someone not seen as a threat to Pickett. Options like Tannehill or Jacoby Brissett are mentioned to create a comfortable and confident environment for Pickett. Despite initial rumors suggesting the Steelers’ interest in trading for a high-profile quarterback, team president Art Rooney II has walked back such narratives.

Schefter, however, believes the Steelers are open to a training camp competition between Pickett and another quarterback.

While Tomlin’s statements about not leaving Pickett as the unquestioned starter may be considered, skepticism exists, given Tomlin’s history of making random remarks for media attention.

The Steelers’ actions, including allowing speculation about trading for a quarterback and coordinator Arthur Smith expressing enthusiasm about working with Pickett, create uncertainty about whether they will truly entertain a competition or ultimately hand Pickett the starting job.
