The Los Angeles Rams have officially elevated cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to their active roster and announced his acquisition under a multi-year deal. This move comes just in time for the Rams’ upcoming Thursday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Witherspoon, who joined the Rams earlier this year after a slew of injuries hit their secondary, has been a key figure on their practice squad for over a month, and now the team is ready to bring him back into action.
Witherspoon, a seasoned NFL veteran, spent the 2023 season as a starting cornerback for the Rams after previously playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Rams initially sought to upgrade their cornerback position during the offseason with multiple moves, but injuries and inconsistent performances from other players have led the team to rely on Witherspoon’s experience and skillset once again.
The 29-year-old Colorado alum has had an extensive career with stints on several teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Steelers, and now the Rams. Witherspoon had a standout 2021 season with the Steelers, where he became known as a turnover specialist before a hamstring injury in 2022 derailed his momentum.
Now, with this multi-year contract, the Rams are giving Witherspoon another chance to solidify his role in their defensive backfield, hoping his experience will provide much-needed stability and depth.
