Phillies’ Leadership Seeks Additional Enhancements…
As February approaches, the Philadelphia Phillies have notably kept a low profile during this offseason. Despite falling short of consecutive World Series appearances, there was speculation that president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and owner John Middleton might aggressively pursue star players in the free-agent market.
Nonetheless, with the team already committed to its highest payroll in history after securing Aaron Nola on a lucrative deal, some level of restraint was necessary. Since Dombrowski assumed control of the front office, the organization’s subdued approach has been uncharacteristic.
However, according to prominent Philadelphia radio host Howard Eskin, there’s a different story behind the scenes. Eskin suggested that the Phillies’ leadership is actively seeking to bolster the roster further. “No, absolutely N-O. They are not done. They will get, I believe, another starter and I think they will get another pitcher for the bullpen. And they need another bat,” Eskin stated during an appearance on WIP Middays with Hugh Douglas and Joe Giglio.
This forecast presents a notable anticipation. The Phillies may opt to wait and observe if the asking prices for players like Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery become more favorable before making any decisive moves. It’s worth recalling that Philadelphia didn’t secure Bryce Harper until March of 2019.
Out of the potential additions mentioned by Eskin, strengthening the bullpen appears most likely. This area has been a focal point for the team during this offseason, with reported interest in players like Robert Stephenson and Jordan Hicks, who ultimately signed with other teams.
At this stage, there aren’t many available players capable of significantly altering the team’s trajectory, particularly considering the luxury tax implications. However, Snell and Montgomery could prove worth the investment as the Phillies strive for another shot at the World Series title.
