Despite trailing by 16 points in the second quarter, the Raptors staged a comeback late in the third quarter to secure the lead.
Jordan Nwora, contributing 17 points in just 19 minutes, played a pivotal role in the Raptors’ turnaround. Dennis Schroder also made a significant impact with 16 points and 10 assists. DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points for the Bulls, while Ayo Dosunmu added 21, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Raptors’ resurgence.
The short-handed Raptors, missing key starters like RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Jakob Poeltl, narrowed the Bulls’ lead to 77-75 in the third quarter before taking control. Nwora’s four-point play and subsequent contributions extended the Raptors’ lead, ultimately securing the win.
Thaddeus Young, praising Bruce Brown’s seamless integration into the team, commended his basketball IQ and ability to adapt quickly. Jalen McDaniels also played a crucial role, hitting a three-pointer that increased the lead to 102-94.
DeRozan tried to rally the Bulls, cutting the deficit to 104-100, but Toronto regained momentum by forcing turnovers and capitalizing on them. Despite DeRozan’s efforts, the Raptors held on for a 118-107 victory.
The Raptors’ defensive strategy, particularly a trapping technique that resulted in 17 turnovers for the Bulls, played a crucial role in their success. Young emphasized the significance of taking care of the ball, acknowledging critical turnovers in the late stages of the game.
Toronto’s win was notable, considering the absence of key starters, while the Bulls faced challenges with Patrick Williams sidelined due to an injured left foot. Williams is expected to be reassessed in about two weeks, with hopes of returning after the All-Star break, according to Bulls coach Billy Donovan.
