The White Sox ink a deal with John Brebbia and designate Romy González for assignment

The White Sox have acquired right-handed relief pitcher John Brebbia, who, in the previous season, pitched 38 1⁄3 innings with a 3.99 ERA, 3.93 FIP, and 4.23 xFIP. Over his six-season MLB career, the 33-year-old has maintained a 3.42 ERA, 3.52 FIP, and 4.41 xFIP across 299 2/3 innings, accumulating a career fWAR of 3.2. Notably, Brebbia, despite being primarily a reliever, has made 21 starts in the last two years, functioning as an opener with an impressive 1.59 career ERA in such games.

The White Sox, in need of reliable pitchers, hope Brebbia can contribute positively. In a corresponding move, utility player Romy González has been designated for assignment due to his underwhelming performance, displaying a.222/.239/.361 slash line and -0.2 fWAR in 86 games across three MLB seasons.

On a positive note, All-Star center fielder Luis Robert Jr. is ranked third among MLB center fielders, according to MLB Network. Despite the team’s struggles, Robert had a standout 2023 season, achieving a 5.0 fWAR in 145 games with a.264/.315/.542 slash line, 38 home runs, and exceptional defense. This recognition marks a bright spot for the White Sox in recent years.
