49ers’ biggest reasons for concern after comeback win over Packers in Divisional Round

In the NFC Divisional Round clash, the San Francisco 49ers faced a precarious situation, trailing the Green Bay Packers 21-14 after a well-executed touchdown play by Packers’ quarterback Jordan Love to Tucker Kraft. The 49ers managed to reclaim the lead, securing a 24-21 victory with just over a minute left on the clock, courtesy of Christian McCaffrey’s 6-yard touchdown run.

However, the win did not mask the concerns that emerged for the 49ers during the game, prompting reflection for head coach Kyle Shanahan. Questions arise about whether their lackluster performance, affecting every aspect of their game, was merely a result of rust from a bye week and a meaningless Week 18 or if it signals a genuine worry heading into the conference title game.

Quarterback Purdy, despite finishing the game strongly with a game-winning drive, struggled throughout, completing less than 60% of his passes and earning a passer rating of 86.7. Purdy’s erratic throws, even if narrowly escaping Packers defenders, led to offensive inefficiency with two three-and-outs and a five-play drive resulting in three incomplete passes.

The Packers consistently pressured Purdy, tallying six quarterback hits despite only one sack. This vulnerability could be exploited by the 49ers’ future opponents.

Special teams also contributed to the 49ers’ challenges. A crucial moment occurred just before halftime when rookie kicker Jake Moody’s 48-yard field goal attempt was blocked by the Packers’ Colby Wooden. Additionally, the 49ers squandered their lead in the third quarter after a kick-off return allowed the Packers to score swiftly and regain control.

The usually reliable 49ers defense faced issues, with blown coverages leading to significant plays for the Packers. Notably, Love exploited busted coverages to find Bo Melton for a score, and later, Kraft secured a touchdown reception.

As the 49ers await their next opponent, whether the Detroit Lions or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they must address these concerns to ensure a more polished performance in the upcoming games.
