Patriots Set to Bid Farewell to Key Offensive Lineman in Free Agency…

The New England Patriots are expected to part ways with standout offensive lineman Mike Onwenu, who is among their pending free agents this offseason.

Despite the team’s struggles on the offensive line in recent years, it appeared that the 26-year-old, known for his versatility and durability, would be a priority re-signing.

Onwenu, who played various positions, including right guard, right tackle, and left guard during his four seasons with the Patriots, participated in 32 of 34 games in the last two seasons.

Despite Onwenu’s potential to address the team’s offensive line weaknesses, it is increasingly likely that he will not return to the Patriots for the upcoming season.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted that many teams see Onwenu as the top offensive lineman in free agency due to his physicality, quickness, and ability to play multiple positions. The Patriots are aware that Onwenu is unlikely to return, and he is expected to have several competitive offers.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Onwenu developed into a crucial player on the offensive line, playing 99% of the offensive snaps in the 2022 season. His potential departure raises concerns for the Patriots’ offensive line, which could undergo significant changes this offseason.

The left tackle Trent Brown is likely to leave after a challenging season, and there is speculation about the retirement of David Andrews after eight seasons.

While the Patriots invested in the offensive line during the previous draft by selecting Jake Andrews, Sidy Sow, and Antonio Mafi, none of the rookies made a significant impact in their first season.

If Onwenu departs, it will add to the challenges faced by first-time head coach Jerod Mayo, who will need to ensure the development of young linemen to achieve at least satisfactory performance from the unit.
