Former Geelong Midfield Maestro Returns to Kardinia Park in Off-Field Role for 2024 Season…

In an anticipated development, Shaun Higgins, the former Geelong midfielder, is set to make a comeback to Kardinia Park in 2024, albeit in a different capacity. Higgins, who concluded his AFL journey at the conclusion of the 2022 season, traversing through the Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, and Geelong, has decided to contribute to the Cats in a matchday role.

The Newtown and Chilwell product initially entered the AFL scene in 2005 when he was drafted by the Western Bulldogs. His time with the Bulldogs saw him accumulate an impressive 129 games in the distinctive blue, white, and red colors. Subsequently, he sought a change, transitioning to North Melbourne where he left an indelible mark over six seasons, earning accolades such as two Syd Barker Medals and an All-Australian selection.

Following North Melbourne, Higgins felt the gravitational pull of his hometown and returned to Geelong after the Cats’ grand final appearance in 2020. However, his stint in the hoops was met with challenges as he grappled with injuries and fluctuating form, managing to participate in only 23 games before ultimately calling curtains on his illustrious career. Unfortunately, this decision preceded Geelong’s triumphant premiership in 2023, a bittersweet conclusion for the seasoned midfielder.

Now, after a hiatus from the competitive arena, Higgins is poised to re-enter the Geelong fold, not as a player but in a matchday role under the tutelage of coach Chris Scott. News from 9 News Melbourne reveals that Higgins will occupy a spot on the interchange and play a pivotal role in the Cats’ game operations throughout the upcoming season.

Higgins is not the only prodigal son returning to the Cats, as others like James Rahilly and Steven King have assumed assistant coaching positions under the revamped leadership of football boss Andrew Mackie, a triple premiership player. Geelong’s 2024 campaign is scheduled to kick off with a home fixture against St Kilda on Saturday, March 17 at GMHBA Stadium. As the Cats embark on a new season, the return of familiar faces, including Higgins in his new role, adds an intriguing dimension to the unfolding narrative of Geelong’s football journey.
