In a heartbreaking development for Rangers fans, reports out of Madison Square Garden indicate that the New York Rangers are preparing to part ways with All-Star defenseman Adam Fox, a decision that comes on the heels of head coach Peter Laviolette’s recent departure from the organization.
Fox, who signed a seven-year, $66.5 million contract extension in 2021 (averaging $9.5 million per year), has been one of the cornerstone players of the Rangers’ blue line and a fan-favorite since arriving in New York. But with Laviolette’s exit and a possible coaching overhaul on the horizon, the Rangers’ front office is reportedly looking to reset parts of the roster — and that may include moving on from one of their most talented and highest-paid players.
“There’s no denying Adam’s talent,” a team insider said. “But with a new era possibly beginning and key changes expected, tough decisions have to be made. His name has come up more than once.”
Fox, 26, won the Norris Trophy in 2021 and has consistently ranked among the NHL’s top defensemen in both offensive production and defensive reliability. His exit would not only represent a significant shake-up on the ice, but also a clear signal that the Rangers are entering a transitional phase following multiple playoff disappointments.
Rangers general manager Chris Drury has not made any public comment on Fox’s future, but insiders say the organization is “weighing all options” — including potential trades that could bring in multiple assets in return.
“I love New York, and I love wearing this sweater,” Fox reportedly told teammates recently. “But I know this league is a business, and anything can happen.”
As the Rangers fan base processes the stunning possibility of Fox’s departure, speculation is already mounting about potential landing spots — with teams like the Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators, and Detroit Red Wings rumored to be monitoring the situation closely.
