Chiefs Coaching Staff Reacts to L’Jarius Sneed’s Pro Bowl Snub, Risky DL Signing in Week 18…

The Kansas City Chiefs’ coaching staff is expressing disappointment over the Pro Bowl snub of cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, despite his outstanding performance this season. Sneed, the team’s top cornerback, has not allowed a single touchdown in coverage, holding opposing quarterbacks to a mere 56.2 rating when targeting him.

His impressive stats include allowing only 51 completions out of 100 passes thrown his way, resulting in 478 yards, less than 4.8 yards per target. Sneed has also broken up a career-high 14 passes and recorded only six missed tackles this season.

Despite these accomplishments, Sneed was not included in the AFC’s Pro Bowl roster, leading to disappointment among the Chiefs’ coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo expressed his disappointment, emphasizing the deserving nature of Sneed’s candidacy. Other notable cornerbacks selected for the Pro Bowl include Denver’s Patrick Surtain II, Sauce Gardner of the New York Jets, Miami’s Jalen Ramsey, and Cleveland’s Denzel Ward.

Sneed, known for his humble and quiet demeanor, has not commented on the snub. Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt advised Sneed to remain humble and positive, emphasizing that his time will come. The coaching staff believes Sneed’s lack of flashy self-promotion may have contributed to the Pro Bowl oversight.

In contrast, there was some positive news for the coaching staff as former Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward, now with the San Francisco 49ers, earned his first Pro Bowl honor. Ward, who played for the Chiefs from 2018-2021, secured a spot as a starter in the NFC, boasting five interceptions and an NFL-leading 23 passes defended.

In a separate development, the Chiefs made a risky signing at defensive tackle in Week 18 by adding Isaiah Buggs to the practice squad. Buggs, released by the Detroit Lions, had a tumultuous season marked by social media drama and healthy scratches. The Chiefs’ decision to sign Buggs, known for his emotional outbursts, raises questions about the team’s strategy, particularly before the playoffs.
