The New York Mets have made another splash in the free-agent market, signing left-handed pitcher Brandon Waddell to a three-year, $56-million contract. The deal, announced late Tuesday, bolsters the Mets’ pitching rotation with a seasoned southpaw who has been steadily climbing the ranks of elite pitchers in the league.
A Key Acquisition
Waddell, 29, has spent the past few seasons developing into a reliable arm. Known for his versatility as both a starter and reliever, Waddell posted a career-best ERA of 3.48 last season while striking out 132 batters over 145 innings. His ability to handle high-pressure situations, coupled with his knack for limiting hard contact, made him one of the most sought-after lefties in this year’s free-agent class.
“Brandon brings exactly what we need to our staff,” said Mets General Manager Billy Eppler. “He’s a competitor who has proven he can get outs in any role, and his experience and leadership will be invaluable as we aim for a deep postseason run.”
Filling a Critical Need
The Mets’ pitching depth was a major focus this offseason, especially after the departure of veteran lefty reliever Brooks Raley and inconsistencies within the bullpen last year. Waddell’s signing addresses this gap, providing manager Carlos Mendoza with a flexible arm who can serve as a middle-inning reliever or step into the rotation if needed.
“I’m thrilled to join an organization that’s committed to winning,” Waddell said during his introductory press conference. “The Mets’ vision aligns with my goals, and I’m excited to contribute however I can.”
A Rising Star
Drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Waddell’s career trajectory has been anything but linear. After bouncing between the minors and majors for several seasons, he found his footing with the Minnesota Twins in 2023, delivering a breakout campaign. His success was driven by an improved cutter-slider combo, which has become his signature weapon against both right-handed and left-handed hitters.
Mets’ Big Offseason Moves Continue
The Waddell signing is the latest in a series of aggressive moves by the Mets, who have shown a willingness to invest heavily in both established stars and emerging talent. With the addition of Waddell, the Mets have now committed over $100 million this offseason to strengthening their roster, signaling their determination to compete in a stacked National League East.
The deal also reflects the Mets’ growing emphasis on pitching depth. Paired with aces like Kodai Senga and veteran Max Scherzer, Waddell’s presence provides stability and versatility to a rotation and bullpen that faced challenges with injuries and workload management last season.
Looking Ahead
As the Mets prepare for the 2025 season, expectations are high. With Waddell in the mix, the team hopes to improve upon last year’s third-place finish in the NL East and make a deeper postseason push. For fans, Waddell represents a blend of reliability and potential, a player poised to make a significant impact on a team hungry for success.
Waddell’s journey from journeyman to coveted free agent is a testament to his resilience and hard work. Now, under the bright lights of Citi Field, he’ll look to cement his place as a key piece of the Mets’ championship aspirations.
