Phillies Face Growing Competition in Pursuit of Pitcher From Rivals…

Despite the recent acquisition of pitcher Kyle Gibson by the St. Louis Cardinals, the Philadelphia Phillies remain active in their pursuit of pitching talent.

The Phillies have shown interest in pitcher Sonny Gray, who played a key role in the Minnesota Twins’ success in the American League Central.

However, the competition for Gray’s signature is intensifying. Following the Cardinals’ signing of Gibson to a one-year deal, reports suggest that they may continue bolstering their pitching staff, with Gray and Japanese star Yoshinobu Yamamoto also in consideration.

The Cardinals join the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, and Boston Red Sox in expressing interest in Gray. Gray recently declined the Twins’ $20.325 million qualifying offer, resulting in the Twins receiving draft pick compensation from the team that ultimately signs him.

Despite already having a strong rotation with the re-signing of Aaron Nola to a long-term contract, the Phillies see Gray as an opportunity to add veteran depth.

The 33-year-old pitcher boasts an impressive career spanning 11 Major League seasons, with stints at Oakland, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, and the Twins.

Gray, a three-time All-Star and two-time Top 10 finisher in Cy Young voting, spent the past two seasons with the Twins, contributing to their success in the AL Central.

In 2023, he posted an 8-8 record with a 2.79 ERA in 32 starts, allowing a league-low 0.4 home runs per nine innings. Gray’s overall career record includes 98 wins, 85 losses, a 3.47 ERA, 1,521 strikeouts, and 544 walks in 1,571 innings pitched.
