Yankees Secure Former Tigers’ Catcher as Bench Coach for the 2023 Season…

The Yankees have chosen experience to fill the vacant bench coach position, opting for a seasoned baseball mind to join Manager Aaron Boone in the dugout for the upcoming season.

Brad Ausmus, 54, has been selected for the role, as reported by Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Ausmus brings substantial managerial experience to the team, having previously managed the Tigers from 2014 to 2017 and the Angels in 2019.

In the 2022 season, he served as the bench coach for the Athletics. The need for a new bench coach arose on November 6 when Carlos Mendoza departed to manage the Mets.

Joining Ausmus as a new addition to Boone’s coaching staff is hitting coach James Rowson, who replaces Sean Casey. Casey, brought in during the previous season, declined the opportunity to return, opting to retire and spend time with his family in Pittsburgh.

With this appointment, Ausmus becomes the fifth member of the Yankees’ coaching staff with major-league experience, joining Boone, bullpen coach Mike Harvey, assistant hitting coach Brad Wilkerson, and first-base coach Travis Chapman.

A Connecticut native and Dartmouth alum, Ausmus enjoyed an 18-season career as a big-league catcher with the Padres, Tigers, Astros, and Dodgers. As a manager, he achieved a 314-332 record with two winning seasons, leading the Tigers to a 90-win season and an AL Central title in his rookie managerial year in 2014.

Overall, Ausmus is regarded as a strong addition to the Yankees coaching staff, bringing both playing and managerial experience to the team.

The current coaching lineup for the Yankees includes Aaron Boone as the manager, James Rowson as the hitting coach, Casey Dykes as the assistant hitting coach, Matt Blake as the pitching coach, Desi Druschel as the assistant pitching coach, Mike Harkey as the bullpen coach, Travis Chapman as the first base coach, Luis Rojas as the third base coach, and Tanner Swanson as the quality control and catching coach.
