Tigers Name One of Their Top Superstars Who Will Miss ALDS Games 1 and 2

CLEVELAND — The Detroit Tigers have revealed their starting rotation for the upcoming American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Cleveland Guardians. Left-handed pitcher Tyler Holton, who started Wednesday’s series finale in Houston, will take the mound once again for Game 1.

“I’m not sure how many pitchers have started back-to-back games, but he’s going to be on that shortlist,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch.

Hinch also confirmed that ace Tarik Skubal will start Game 2, which could position him to pitch again in a potential Game 5, if needed.

The best-of-five ALDS is set to begin at 1:08 p.m. on Saturday at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Holton, who delivered a scoreless inning against the Astros, is expected to pitch deeper into the game against the Guardians, who feature a predominantly left-handed lineup.

After Holton’s exit, right-hander Reese Olson is a likely candidate to provide multiple innings of relief. However, Hinch mentioned the possibility of opting for a full bullpen approach without relying on a traditional long reliever.

Holton has solidified himself as one of baseball’s top relievers over the past two seasons, posting an impressive 7-2 record with a 2.19 ERA over 94 1/3 innings in 2024.

“He’s the kind of pitcher you want in every situation,” Hinch said. “He’s got a slow heartbeat, which allows me to use him in any scenario. Plus, his ability to get anyone out is crucial. He’s got a variety of pitches, knows how to be creative, and isn’t afraid to be stubborn. Most importantly, he’s a strike thrower.”
