Walker IV Aims to Thrive in a Key Role with the Celtics

Walker IV is aiming to make an impact with the Celtics in a supportive role. Known for his accuracy from the corner three, he’s been consistently knocking down shots during post-practice shooting sessions this week. In addition to his three-point shooting, Walker IV highlighted his ability to cut to the basket, contribute bench scoring, rebound, and move efficiently in transition, all while focusing on the smaller aspects of the game. At 25 years old, soon to turn 26 in December, he emphasized that he still has plenty of room to grow.

His path to the NBA hasn’t been easy. Growing up in Reading, Pennsylvania, Walker IV faced childhood abuse, and basketball became his refuge. Over time, he discovered that mental strength is key to basketball success—about 90% of the game. He has worked with a sports psychologist to build a more resilient mindset, something the Celtics will continue to monitor during their preseason trip to Abu Dhabi, where they’ll face the Nuggets in two games, and throughout the rest of training camp. Assigning him to their G League affiliate in Maine could be a gamble, as other teams could pick him up, but some players have refined their skills within the Celtics’ system and gone on to win in Boston.

“I feel like I’ve been playing this game since I was born,” Walker IV said. “The toughest part of the game is challenging yourself—competing with yourself, striving to get better, staying committed to your routines, and never getting complacent. How do you keep fighting when you feel like there’s nothing left to give?”
