“Following in the Footsteps of a Legend: Hart Reflects on Family Legacy and Inspiration”

In a 2016 interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia, while playing for Villanova, Hart reflected on a family member who reached the pinnacle of professional sports. “Someone in your family who won [four] World Series titles, was an MVP, and someone you look up to, is someone you aspire to be like in your own sport,” Hart said.

Hart spoke of using this relative as a role model. “He was the first Black player to play for the Yankees. The way he carried himself is something I try to emulate. My dad would always tell me stories about going to the ballpark to watch him play and how much he learned from those moments.”

Before a game on Tuesday, Hart had the chance to meet Yankees manager Aaron Boone and spent time chatting with players Juan Soto, Giancarlo Stanton, and Anthony Volpe during batting practice.

Howard, an outstanding defensive catcher known for his steady hitting, played 13 seasons with the Yankees from 1955 to 1967. He won the American League’s Most Valuable Player award in 1963. His career, which began in the Negro Leagues and ended with the Red Sox, saw him finish with a .274 batting average, 168 home runs, and 775 RBIs.

Following his playing career, Howard became a well-respected coach with the Yankees, contributing to their 1977 and 1978 World Series championships.

Reflecting on his legacy, Hart added, “He’s someone I look up to, someone I wish I had the chance to meet. Hopefully, in a few generations, someone in my family will say the same about me.”
