Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin have shared a spirited yet friendly rivalry since they both entered the NHL in the 2005-06 season.
While Crosby boasts three Stanley Cup titles compared to Ovechkin’s one, Ovi has edged out Crosby in one key area: goal-scoring. This season, Ovechkin is on track to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL scoring record, although it’s more likely he will achieve this milestone in the following season.
In a recent interview, Crosby opened up about Ovechkin’s quest for the record, offering insightful comments that reflect his deep respect for the Capitals star.
“It’s really cool,” Crosby said. “To play in the same division and to share the history we’ve had over the years, coming into the league at the same time with high expectations, and to see him so close to what was once thought to be an untouchable record—it’s incredible what he’s accomplishing. I feel grateful to be a part of that.”
Ovechkin currently has 853 goals and needs 41 more to tie Gretzky’s record of 894. Once he surpasses this milestone, it’s likely he’ll aim for 900 to set a new benchmark. However, reaching 1,000 goals seems increasingly improbable.
