Breaking News: 49ers’ 28-Year Old Regular Starting RB Christian McCaffrey Out for the Season Amid Worrisome Conditions …

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was a surprising absence in the team’s season opener against the New York Jets. While initial reports cited a calf strain, it has now come to light that McCaffrey is also battling Achilles tendinitis, raising greater concerns about his availability.

With the 49ers preparing for their Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, McCaffrey’s status remains uncertain, and there’s a possibility he could miss the game as well.

“I don’t know the answer to that,” said 49ers general manager John Lynch. “He’s dealing with Achilles tendinitis, which can feel fine one day and then flare up the next. It’s been frustrating for Christian and for us because he’s such an incredible player.”

Lynch emphasized the team’s cautious approach, stating, “The long-term health of Christian is our priority. He changes our team, but we’re also confident we can perform at a high level without him.”

Update: McCaffrey Ruled Out for Week 2 vs. Vikings, IR a Possibility

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed McCaffrey will not play in Week 2, leaving open the chance of an IR stint. Shanahan explained that the injuries involve different areas of the same leg, though he did mention McCaffrey could have played in Week 1 if the stakes had been higher.

For now, Jordan Mason is expected to step up once again, providing the 49ers with a reliable option in McCaffrey’s absence.
