The Miami Hurricanes boast a wealth of talent at running back, a strength that could propel them towards their championship goals. Head Coach Mario Cristobal has fostered a “divide-and-conquer” approach, utilizing a variety of backs to keep everyone fresh and maximize offensive efficiency.

Leading the charge are Damien Martinez, the transfer from Oregon State, and Mark Fletcher Jr., who’s back after a Lisfranc injury. Together, they’ve carried the bulk of the load in the first two games, combining for 28 carries out of Miami’s total 59. Martinez brings power and consistency, while Fletcher contributes explosiveness and a knack for finding the endzone.

But the depth doesn’t stop there. True freshman Jordan Lyle has impressed the coaching staff, earning early playing time. Redshirt freshman Chris Johnson is pushing for a bigger role, and redshirt sophomore Ajay Allen remains in the mix after contributing last season.

This competition breeds camaraderie and pushes everyone to perform at their best. “Anyone in this room can start,” says Fletcher. “It keeps you sharp because the next guy is waiting. But we all love each other and want what’s best for the team.”

Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson emphasizes the importance of balance. While quarterback Cam Ward allows for a pass-heavy approach, a strong running game is crucial. “We’re going to be balanced,” Dawson says. “We can run the ball and wear teams down. We have a handful of backs we trust, and Coach Merritt does a great job rotating them in.”

Cam Ward himself recognizes the value of the running backs. “Having that two-headed monster in Martinez and Fletcher is punishing for defenses,” he says. “They open things up for the passing game. They’re a blessing for us.”

With a deep and talented running back room, the Miami Hurricanes are well-positioned to maintain a balanced offensive attack throughout the season.
