Former NFL running back Cierre Wood was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday for the 2019 death of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter. According to the Associated Press, Wood had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse about four months prior.
Wood, now 33, will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years of his murder sentence. Additionally, he was sentenced to serve between 28 months and six years for the child abuse charge, with both sentences to be served consecutively.
Wood began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans in 2013. After being released for unspecified team rule violations, he briefly joined the New England Patriots’ practice squad, followed by short stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, and Buffalo Bills. He later spent two years playing in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
