The Pittsburgh Pirates have raised eyebrows with the surprise call-up of right-handed pitcher Domingo Germán from Triple-A Indianapolis. Germán, a former New York Yankee, is expected to join the team for Friday’s game in Los Angeles.
While Germán boasts a past accomplishment like throwing a perfect game in 2023, his recent performance raises questions. He wasn’t dominant in the minors, posting a 5.29 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 13 starts. The move seems more likely driven by Germán’s opt-out clause in his minor league contract than a pressing need in the Pirates’ starting rotation.
Uncertain Role for Germán
Reports suggest Germán might even replace scheduled starter Mitch Keller, a reliable pitcher with the most innings pitched on the team. However, a more likely scenario sees Germán taking over for recently struggling Luis Ortiz, who could provide bullpen depth. Ultimately, Germán’s role might be temporary, with the impending return of injured pitcher Jared Jones.
Second Chance with Checkered Past
Germán’s past isn’t without controversy. Suspensions related to personal conduct issues in 2019 and 2020 and a clubhouse incident in 2023 raised red flags. However, he entered treatment for alcohol abuse and signed a minor league deal with the Pirates in March.
Future Unclear
While Germán possesses a winning record and decent career stats, his current form is a concern. The Pirates, with a strong pitching pipeline, likely don’t view him as a long-term solution. Impressive performances could change their minds, but his future is likely elsewhere after 2024.
Roster Moves Await
The Pirates haven’t officially announced the call-up, leaving corresponding roster moves uncertain. Recent addition Ben Heller seems the most likely candidate to be removed from the active roster, potentially landing on the 40-man roster as well.
