Breaking News: Vikings 25-year-old Cornerback Down And Replaced With Immediate Effect…

The Minnesota Vikings’ cornerback situation worsened on Wednesday when Mekhi Blackmon suffered an ACL tear, as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Blackmon, a second-year player and third-round pick from last year, will miss the entire season. This follows the recent tragic death of rookie Khyree Jackson, further depleting the cornerback group.

Last season, Blackmon played 43% of the defensive snaps and was becoming a key player for Brian Flores’ defense. With him out, Byron Murphy is the only reliable cornerback left. The rest of the group includes free agent addition Shaq Griffin, who is on his fifth team in as many seasons, and third-year players Andrew Booth Jr. and Akayleb Evans, who have struggled with consistency. Recent signing Duke Shelley has shown potential but is undersized.

The Vikings added depth with Jacobi Francis on Thursday but might need more moves before the season starts. Here are some potential options for the Vikings if they decide to sign another cornerback:

Xavien Howard

Howard is likely the top free agent cornerback available. A former All-Pro with 29 career interceptions, he played under Flores in Miami and would fit well in the Vikings’ defense. However, Howard, 31, suffered a foot injury last season and might demand a higher salary than the Vikings are willing to pay. Despite these factors, he’s a strong candidate.

Stephon Gilmore

Gilmore, 33, is a former Defensive Player of the Year who has played for several teams recently. Although he’s no longer at his peak, he remains a viable option. Last season with Dallas, he started all 17 games, recording two interceptions and 13 passes defended.

Patrick Peterson

Peterson, who played for the Vikings from 2021-2022, could return due to his familiarity with the team. At 34, he’s lost some of his former athleticism but still has a knack for interceptions, recording multiple picks in 11 of his 13 seasons. He started 16 games for the Steelers last season.

J.C. Jackson

Jackson, 28, was a rising star in New England before signing a lucrative deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. However, he struggled there and was traded back to the Patriots, who eventually cut him. If Flores can help him regain his form, Jackson could be a valuable addition to the Vikings.
