Panthers’ Bottom Six Remains Competitive Despite Roster Changes
As the Florida Panthers head into the new season as the reigning Stanley Cup champions, they aim to continue their dominance and strive for a back-to-back title. However, the team has undergone significant changes during the offseason due to free agency, which has reshuffled the roster considerably.
Key contributors from the past two seasons, such as Ryan Lomberg and Kevin Stenlund, have departed, leaving gaps in the bottom-six forward group. To address these vacancies, General Manager Bill Zito has been proactive in acquiring new talent. He signed valuable depth players like Tomas Nosek and Jesper Boqvist while retaining key players like Anton Lundell.
New Additions
The revamped bottom six may have a different look, but it remains poised to be competitive. Tomas Nosek, previously with the New Jersey Devils, joined the Panthers on a one-year contract valued at $775,000. Nosek boasts a strong career faceoff win percentage, with a 54.4% success rate in the regular season and 57.2% in the playoffs, outperforming Stenlund in both areas.
Jesper Boqvist, formerly of the Boston Bruins, was also signed to a one-year deal. Boqvist contributed 14 points (six goals, eight assists) and a plus-14 rating in 47 games with Boston. These new additions enhance the competitiveness of the Panthers’ bottom six.
Returning Players
Despite the roster changes, the Panthers still have key depth players. Anton Lundell, Zito’s first draft pick, recently secured a six-year contract worth $30 million, with an annual average of $5 million. Lundell was instrumental in the recent Cup win, recording 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) during the postseason. He has evolved into an exceptional two-way center, similar to captain Aleksander Barkov, and has accumulated 43 regular-season goals and 69 assists throughout his career.
Eetu Luostarinen, who joined the Panthers in 2021, has continued to impress. During the Cup run, he scored two goals and added six assists, bringing his career playoff totals with the Panthers to five goals and ten assists.
Forward Jonah Gadjovich is expected to step up in Lomberg’s absence. Known for his physical play, Gadjovich is likely to fill Lomberg’s role effectively.
Opportunities for Prospects
With some openings on the roster, there are chances for prospects to step up. William Lockwood, who made his NHL debut last season, recorded his first assist. Mackie Samoskevich might get another opportunity to prove himself after a brief stint in the NHL last season. Newcomers like Justin Sourdif and Linus Eriksson also have a chance to make an impact.
Overall Strength
Despite the roster changes, the Panthers’ bottom six remains robust. The team’s strategic signings and the potential contributions from younger players suggest they will continue to be a formidable force. Reaching the Stanley Cup Final for a third consecutive time is challenging, with the last team to achieve this being the Tampa Bay Lightning. If the core players perform at their best, the Panthers could very well contend for another championship.
