BREAKING: New GM Will Face Immediate Challenge with Deadline Extension on a Promising Key Player…

Leon Draisaitl, one of the Edmonton Oilers’ star players, has an uncertain future regarding his contract extension. As an unrestricted free agent in 2025, Draisaitl, currently earning $8.5 million annually, is expected to command a significantly higher salary in his next deal, given his exceptional performance.

The timeline for Draisaitl’s new contract remains unclear. The Oilers are currently without a general manager after Ken Holland’s departure, with team president Jeff Jackson temporarily filling the role. Jackson has indicated that he is not interested in the permanent GM position, prompting an ongoing search for a full-time replacement. It’s logical to assume that significant contract negotiations, such as Draisaitl’s, would be deferred until a new GM is appointed.

However, Jiri Poner, Draisaitl’s European-based agent, suggested there is a timeframe for finalizing the extension. In an interview with Eishockey News’ Michael Bauer, Poner mentioned that an agreement needs to be reached by the end of the summer:

“There’s no rush yet, but either it happens quickly, i.e., by the end of August, or it doesn’t work out at all,” Poner stated. “It will also become clear whether Edmonton really wants him or not. Leon holds all the trump cards.”

Although the Oilers technically have until next July to negotiate, Poner’s remarks imply that Draisaitl may prefer to avoid contract talks during the season. This preference places additional pressure on the new GM to secure an agreement promptly.

Draisaitl has been a prolific scorer, surpassing 100 points in five of the last six seasons and ranking second in NHL points during that period, only behind his teammate Connor McDavid. McDavid’s $12.5 million annual average value (AAV) contract, signed in 2017, isn’t a perfect comparison. However, Auston Matthews’ recent $13.25 million AAV deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs could set a benchmark for Draisaitl, particularly if he reaches the open market next summer.

The new GM will face the challenge of managing the team’s finances, especially with McDavid’s contract expiring a year later, which will likely demand a substantial increase. This situation necessitates a swift resolution regarding Draisaitl’s extension.

Despite the potential complexities, Poner expressed confidence in reaching an agreement to keep Draisaitl with the Oilers for the long term.
