REPORT: Adam Thielen Pulls a Shocking Reaction to Kirk Cousins Leaving the Vikings…

Adam Thielen expressed surprise at the Minnesota Vikings’ decision to part ways with quarterback Kirk Cousins this offseason. Thielen, recently released by the Vikings himself, understands the business side of the NFL but didn’t foresee Cousins’ departure, especially after his strong start in 2023 before his Achilles injury in Week 8.

In a May 8 episode of the Star Tribune’s “Access Vikings” podcast, Thielen remarked, “I didn’t expect it because of how well he played last year and how he had become a leader. It was the first time in his career he truly seemed himself and played at a high level.”

### Thielen Respects Vikings’ Roster Decisions
Reflecting on the Vikings’ recent moves, Thielen acknowledged the team’s need to retool. When Cousins joined the team, the Vikings were focused on a championship run, boasting the league’s top defense and a star-studded offense. However, after failing to make it back to the NFC Championship, the team had to let go of several veterans in 2020 to keep Cousins.

The new regime has since made significant changes, including releasing key players like Eric Kendricks, Dalvin Cook, and Thielen himself, culminating in Cousins’ departure this offseason. Although the Vikings made a serious offer for Cousins to stay, the Atlanta Falcons ultimately secured him with a four-year, $180 million deal, featuring $100 million guaranteed in the first two years. Cousins prioritized contract structure and security, and the Vikings drafting a rookie quarterback also influenced his decision.

### Looking Ahead
Thielen respects the new regime’s vision for the team’s future. “I think Kwesi [Adofo-Mensah] and Kevin [O’Connell] have done a great job setting up for the future with a clear vision,” Thielen said. While he would have liked to finish his career in Minnesota, he appreciates the team’s direction.

As Cousins joins the Falcons, he is expected to make an immediate impact in the NFC South, where he will face Thielen’s Carolina Panthers twice. A notable matchup will occur in Week 14, when the Vikings host the Falcons, potentially pitting Cousins against his successor, J.J. McCarthy.
