The New York Mets are facing a pressing need to fill the void at first base with spring training just around the corner. While re-signing free-agent slugger Pete Alonso remains the most logical solution, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns appears to be exploring alternative options. Among the most intriguing possibilities is a potential blockbuster trade for Toronto Blue Jays’ star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
According to reports, the Mets have expressed interest in Guerrero as negotiations with Alonso continue to stall. While New York has internal options like infielders Mark Vientos and Brett Baty, or even newly re-signed Jesse Winker, none provide the same level of offensive production or star power as Guerrero or Alonso.
But what would it take for the Mets to land Guerrero? Baseball analyst Jim Riley of Ballcap Sports recently explored hypothetical trade scenarios involving the Mets and Blue Jays. In one proposed deal, Riley suggested the following package to bring Guerrero to Queens:
- Mets receive: Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- Blue Jays receive: Tylor Megill (RHP), Ronny Mauricio (INF), Blade Tidwell (RHP), and Jett Williams (SS).
This hypothetical trade would give the Mets a premier slugger to pair with Juan Soto in the middle of the lineup. Guerrero, who is under contract for $28.5 million in 2025 before hitting free agency, would provide the Mets with a significant offensive upgrade. On the other side, the Blue Jays would receive two MLB-ready players in Megill and Mauricio, as well as top prospects Tidwell and Williams.
While the Blue Jays trading Guerrero may seem far-fetched—especially after their recent $92.5 million commitment to outfielder Anthony Santander—it could open the door for Toronto to pursue Alonso instead. However, Guerrero remains under team control for one more season, and unless he signs a long-term extension, trade rumors will continue to swirl.
For now, the Mets face a critical decision: either find a way to bring Alonso back or pursue an external solution like Guerrero. Either scenario would shape the franchise’s future and its aspirations for the upcoming season.
The clock is ticking as spring training approaches, and Mets fans eagerly await clarity on the future of the team’s first-base position.
