New England Patriots are off to a dismal 1-6 start, and the heat is mounting on everyone in the organization, including first-year head coach Jerod Mayo. While fans and media have been vocal in their criticism, even legendary figures within the franchise are beginning to speak out.
Patriots icon and 3-time Super Bowl champion Ty Law is the latest to openly criticize Mayo, echoing similar concerns previously voiced by Devin McCourty. During an appearance on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show, Law didn’t hold back in his assessment of the team’s poor performance and Mayo’s leadership.
“He has to do something other than just delegating and standing there coaching,” Law said. “You have to be an active participant. Not only coaching the team, but if need be, going into that offensive huddle on the sideline, making adjustments at halftime. If you need to get on your defense, do it. ‘Hey, offensive coordinator, if you’re going to delegate, I need to go talk to the defense because they’re soft as hell.’”
Law’s frustration mirrors that of the Patriots’ fanbase, as the once-dominant franchise has struggled to regain its footing in the post-Tom Brady era. Sunday’s game against the injury-plagued New York Jets presents a prime opportunity for New England to get back on track. However, another embarrassing loss could only fuel the growing calls for Mayo to be on a shorter leash.
As Law and other Patriots legends continue to weigh in, the pressure on Mayo to turn things around is intensifying. With each passing week, the window for improvement is shrinking, and the Patriots’ faithful are running out of patience.
