Yankees Focus on Clinching AL East, Home-Field Advantage as Playoffs Approach

The schedule makers predicted that the penultimate series between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles could have major playoff implications for both teams. While it technically does, it’s not for the anticipated AL East showdown. Just a few weeks ago, this series looked like it could be crucial in a tight division race, but the Yankees have since taken control, showing a more business-like approach as they’ve built a six-game lead over the Orioles.

The Yankees’ recent success, fueled by improved play and key decisions, has put them on the verge of clinching the AL East, securing home-field advantage in the playoffs, and potentially finishing with the best record in baseball. Unlike the Mets, who have embraced a fun and quirky atmosphere during their season, the Yankees are all about business, evident in their 12-4 surge. This focused attitude was underscored by manager Aaron Boone’s comments following a 5-1 West Coast trip, which ended with a 7-4 victory over the Oakland A’s.

“I think everyone in that room knows what’s at stake and what the mission is,” Boone said after the game. “We know where we are on the calendar, and we see the opportunity ahead of us. The guys are ready to do what it takes to win and set ourselves up for October.”

While securing home-field advantage is important, Boone emphasized that the Yankees have other priorities once they lock down the division.

“We’d love to get it,” Boone said about finishing with the best record. “We’re going to be playing to win these games, and hopefully, we clinch the division first. Of course, we’d like to have the best record, but we also need to balance that with keeping our players in a good spot.”
