In a rare move, Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery publicly criticized the officiating following his team’s controversial loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. The Capitals fell short in a hard-fought game, but Carbery made it clear that he believed the referees played a key role in the outcome, voicing his frustration during the post-game press conference.
“We battled hard, but there were several calls tonight that were simply unacceptable,” Carbery stated. “It felt like we weren’t getting a fair shake. Some of those penalties were game-changers, and we didn’t get the same level of consideration on our end. Our guys deserved better.”
The comments came after a game filled with questionable officiating, including multiple penalties against the Capitals at crucial moments. Carbery pointed out instances where he believed the referees missed obvious calls that could have benefited his team, while flagging minor infractions against the Capitals, giving the Flyers multiple power-play opportunities.
One of the most contentious moments came late in the game when a Flyers player appeared to trip a Capitals skater, but no penalty was called. On the ensuing play, the Flyers capitalized and extended their lead, swinging the momentum firmly in their favor. Carbery noted that this moment was particularly frustrating.
“It’s hard to keep pushing when you feel like the deck is stacked against you,” Carbery said. “Our players work too hard to be affected by officiating like that.”
Though Carbery is known for his calm demeanor, his public critique of the officiating signals the depth of his frustration. Publicly criticizing referees is rare in professional hockey and can often result in fines or further scrutiny from the league. However, Carbery seemed undeterred, standing by his team and calling for accountability in the officiating.
Despite the controversy, Carbery stressed that the Capitals would focus on moving forward and using the game as motivation for the rest of the season.
“We’re not going to let this define us. We’ll regroup, and we’ll be better. But we expect fairness, and tonight we didn’t get that,” Carbery concluded.
