Virginia Tech Looks to Redeem Last Season’s Loss to Rutgers with Improved Preparation

Last season, when the Virginia Tech football team traveled to Piscataway, New Jersey, they faced many uncertainties. They had a new quarterback, struggled on both sides of the ball, and had difficulty stopping the run. Ultimately, the Scarlet Knights exploited this, running the ball throughout the game and securing a 35-16 victory.

This weekend, Rutgers heads to Blacksburg to face the Hokies at Lane Stadium. The Scarlet Knights come into the game with a 2-0 record after wins against Howard and Akron, while Virginia Tech stands at 2-1. For the Hokies, this non-conference matchup has been on their radar for some time, and head coach Brent Pry is confident that his team is better prepared for this year’s encounter.

**Brent Pry Believes Virginia Tech is Ready for Rutgers**

Last season, Rutgers physically dominated the Hokies with little resistance. However, this year, Virginia Tech’s third-year head coach believes his team is more prepared and ready to push back.

“We won’t know for sure until the game starts,” said Pry. “But do I think we’re better prepared? Yes. Do I think we’re stronger, more physical, and playing with better technique? Absolutely. Our quarterback is more comfortable in our system. Last year, our identity was still uncertain. Now, I believe we’re better equipped and ready.”

This time around, Virginia Tech seems more capable of handling Rutgers. They know that on defense, they’ll face a heavy dose of Kyle Monangai, who rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns last season. But with new additions to the defensive line, the Hokies are hoping to contain him better this time — though it’s easier said than done.

On offense, quarterback Kyron Drones now has a full year and offseason under his belt and is much more comfortable with the system. He’s the centerpiece of the Hokies’ attack and can threaten opponents with both his arm and legs. While Virginia Tech may be better prepared for Rutgers this season, the real test lies in executing on the field.
