Renee Montgomery, a two-time WNBA All-Star and co-owner of the Atlanta Dream, has recently come under fire for controversial remarks she made regarding the fan rivalry between Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky. Speaking on her podcast “Montgomery & Company,” Montgomery criticized certain Clark supporters—whom she labeled as “stans”—for their alleged mistreatment of Reese, including the creation of fake nude photos.
Montgomery likened the behavior to extreme sports rivalries, saying, “A diehard [Atlanta] Falcons fan can hate the [New Orleans] Saints, but it would cross the line if they created nude AI pictures of Saints players and sent them to their families. That’s what Caitlin stans have done to Angel Reese.” The bold statement quickly went viral, igniting a social media storm.
While many agreed with Montgomery’s stance against the inappropriate actions, others criticized her for what they saw as an unfair generalization. Some questioned her assumption that Clark’s fans were behind the incidents. “How do you know they were Caitlin fans? Y’all assume too much and cast blame in PURE IGNORANCE!!” wrote one user. Another added, “This is incredibly irresponsible rhetoric coming from a TEAM OWNER… I agree with your central point, but this problem isn’t unique to Clark’s fan base.”
The comments have sparked widespread debate about the boundaries of fan behavior, particularly in high-profile sports rivalries, and how public figures like Montgomery should address these issues.
