Freeze Expresses Desire To Consider Few Capabilities After Tigers Loss…

In a significant decision for Auburn football, head coach Hugh Freeze has chosen to start redshirt freshman Hank Brown over team captain Payton Thorne for the upcoming game against New Mexico, as reported by Justin Hokanson of Auburn Live. Thorne struggled in Week 2 during a disappointing loss to the Cal Golden Bears, completing only 14 of 27 passes for 165 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions, while also rushing for 43 yards and a score.

Freeze acknowledged the need to adjust expectations for the quarterback position. “After reviewing the film, it’s clear we can’t afford to play poorly at that position,” he said. He noted that while some interceptions were due to poor protection or deflections, critical plays expected from Thorne weren’t made. “Payton has to produce, but Hank has been performing well in practice this week. I’m interested to see how they both perform with the opportunities given,” Freeze added.

Following the game against New Mexico, Auburn will begin conference play in Week 4 against Arkansas, leading into a challenging schedule that includes No. 15 Oklahoma at home, followed by tough road games against No. 1 Georgia and No. 6 Missouri.

Regarding Hank Brown’s capabilities, Freeze expressed that he wanted to carefully consider the decision after the loss, having watched the game film. Brown made a notable appearance in last year’s Music City Bowl, completing 7 of 9 passes for 132 yards in the second half, and during garbage time against Alabama A&M this year, he was 3 of 5 for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
