Frustrated Patriots Wide Receiver Exposes Offensive Issues

DeMario Douglas was expected to be a key offensive weapon for the New England Patriots this season, but so far, the second-year wide receiver has fallen short of those expectations. Through two games, Douglas has recorded only two catches for 12 yards and didn’t receive a single target in the Patriots’ recent overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Understandably, Douglas was frustrated after the game, visibly upset over his lack of involvement in the offense.

The struggles of New England’s wide receiver corps were a central topic on NESN’s “Boston Has Entered The Chat” podcast, where analysts Ountae Campbell and Laura Stickells delved into the team’s offensive shortcomings. Campbell voiced concerns over the heavy reliance on Douglas, especially given his draft status and relative inexperience.

“When you see fans on Twitter saying, ‘Oh, Pop Douglas, a sixth-round pick, is upset because he didn’t get any targets,’ that’s an issue,” Campbell remarked. “The Patriots are depending on a sixth-rounder, who’s about 5’10”, to step up and make plays at the start of the season. For a second-year player, that’s a major concern.”

Douglas initially showed promise during his rookie season, hauling in 49 receptions for 561 yards, despite having both Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe at quarterback. Many believed the dynamic slot receiver was poised for a breakout year in 2024, but he has yet to make an impact.

However, there’s still plenty of time for Douglas to turn things around. The Patriots’ upcoming matchup against the New York Jets on Thursday night provides an opportunity for him to reset and play a more prominent role in the offense.
