“I thought it was a solid night, and his decision-making was good,” Freeze commented, according to The Montgomery Advertiser. “After reviewing Monday’s film, I decided Hank would start. If he keeps performing well, he’ll keep the job. If not, it might serve as a wake-up call for the team.”
Freeze confirmed that Brown will start the next game and hinted that the following weeks, particularly against SEC opponents, will reveal more about Brown’s capabilities. “Let’s see how he handles a higher level of competition in SEC play,” Freeze added.
Top Alabama Wide Receiver Commit Visits Auburn
As Auburn gears up for its first SEC game of the season against Arkansas, the team also looks forward to a visit from a top Alabama recruit. Five-star wide receiver Caleb Cunningham, currently committed to Alabama, is scheduled to visit Auburn this weekend.
Cunningham, ranked as the #1 recruit from Mississippi and the #3 wide receiver for the 2025 class, initially committed to Alabama over the summer. However, Auburn and other programs continue to pursue the talented receiver. His upcoming visit will be his first since an official tour in May and could be a pivotal step in Auburn’s efforts to flip his commitment.
Payton Thorne Embraces Leadership Role Despite QB Change
After being replaced by Hank Brown, fifth-year senior Payton Thorne has shifted his focus to his role as a team captain. Despite the benching, Thorne has been commended by both Brown and Freeze for his leadership and positive attitude.
“Hank has spoken highly of Payton, describing him as a great teammate and leader. ‘It’s special. Payton’s such a good dude; I couldn’t say enough good things about him. He’s out there guiding me with his experience, and that says a lot about his character,’ Brown shared, according to Auburn Undercover.”
Defensive Struggles Highlighted by Freeze
While Hank Brown brought energy to Auburn’s offense, the defense faced significant challenges during the game. Although they held New Mexico to a season-low in points, numerous issues remained.
“I didn’t think our defense played well,” Freeze stated post-game, as reported by Auburn Undercover. “We had too many penalties and didn’t contain Dampier. Too many long plays and distances were converted.”
With cornerback Kayin Lee out, Auburn’s secondary struggled, prompting Freeze to emphasize the need for improvement. “We’ll need a better game plan and execution next week,” Freeze concluded.
Auburn faces a critical stretch ahead as they prepare for the challenges of SEC play while looking to strengthen both their offense and defense for upcoming games.
