One of the offseason’s more intriguing but perhaps overlooked moves was the Denver Nuggets signing former MVP Russell Westbrook. Stepping into the role of backup point guard after the team traded Reggie Jackson, Westbrook brings both experience and a winning pedigree.
The veteran guard has become a polarizing figure in recent years due to struggles in adapting to different systems. Last season, while playing for the Los Angeles Clippers, his minutes were reduced at times, reflecting some inconsistencies in his play. Though still a solid contributor, Westbrook no longer boasts the elite athleticism that once defined his game and helped cement his status as a future Hall-of-Famer.
Despite these factors, Westbrook is already making an impression on his new Nuggets teammates. Denver guard Peyton Watson praised Westbrook’s energy and influence, even in the short time they’ve spent together. “He’s been a huge inspiration to me,” Watson said. “The passion he plays with, being unapologetically himself, and leaving it all on the floor—he’s been that guy for as long as I can remember. It’s also special knowing he’s from Long Beach, just like me.”
If Westbrook can channel his signature intensity into his role with Denver, he could be the spark the Nuggets need. After being eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the defending champions are eager to regroup and contend once again. Christian Braun, another Nuggets guard, echoed Watson’s sentiments, describing Westbrook’s style as “downhill, athletic, tough, mean, and in-your-face,” qualities Braun said he admired growing up.
Last season, Westbrook averaged 11.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.5 assists across 68 games for the Clippers, helping them reach the postseason. However, tensions grew between Westbrook and the team, leading both sides to agree to part ways. Now, with the Nuggets, Westbrook has the opportunity to chase a championship once again.
His presence could inject much-needed energy into a Denver squad that seemed to lose its edge late last season. If Westbrook can effectively contribute within his role, the Nuggets may once again be a dominant force in the Western Conference.
