The Philadelphia Flyers’ training camp is rapidly approaching, but the absence of top goalie prospect Alexei Kolosov continues to cast a shadow over the team’s preparations.
Kolosov, 22, signed an entry-level contract with the Flyers in July 2023 but returned to his KHL club, Dinamo Minsk, on loan for the season. Upon completing his KHL stint, he joined the Lehigh Valley Phantoms but struggled to make a lasting impression, appearing in only two games.
However, rumors began to circulate during the offseason suggesting that Kolosov was homesick, struggling to adapt to North America, or facing other personal challenges. These rumors have led to growing concerns about his future with the Flyers.
Back home in Belarus, Kolosov has also faced criticism from some, including retired Russian goalkeeper Andrei Gavrilov. Gavrilov believes that Kolosov did not give his opportunity with the Flyers a fair chance, suggesting that he may have been influenced by negative rumors or simply disliked North America.
“Maybe someone told him that he wouldn’t play,” Gavrilov said in an interview. “Maybe he came, and he didn’t like North America. For me, he had to try.”
Gavrilov also warned that Kolosov may face difficulties finding another NHL team if he continues to be absent. “The rest of the NHL clubs will be afraid to sign him,” he said. “If the Flyers want to trade him somewhere, then the teams will also not have confidence in such a player.”
While it’s understandable if Kolosov is homesick and doesn’t want to return, his absence raises questions about his commitment to his professional career. The Flyers have made efforts to help Russian-speaking players adjust to life in the United States, including the recent addition of Oleg Znarok to their coaching staff.
Moreover, Kolosov may have a chance to see NHL minutes this season. With the Flyers’ goaltending situation still uncertain, he could be the first option if the team faces any injuries or struggles.
However, if Kolosov continues to fail to meet expectations, his NHL dream may be in jeopardy. The Flyers will be closely monitoring his situation and making decisions based on his performance and commitment.
