Sad News: Atlanta Braves Right-Hander Reynaldo López Makes a Shocking U-Turn to the Injury List Due to a Critical…

López exited after pitching just one inning in the Braves’ 12-0 win over the Washington Nationals. During his 25-pitch outing, where 16 were strikes, his fastball velocity noticeably dropped from his usual 96 mph to between 89-94 mph.

The All-Star pitcher has been a standout this season, boasting an 8-5 record and a 2.03 ERA in 24 starts. Previously a reliever for the past three seasons, López transitioned into the Braves’ starting rotation after signing a three-year, $30 million contract last winter.

Despite the setback, Braves manager Brian Snitker provided a hopeful update, stating that an MRI revealed no structural damage.

“The MRI came back clean,” Snitker shared. “He’s got inflammation. Hopefully, we can calm it down, give him a few days off, and see how he responds when he starts throwing again.”

With less than three weeks remaining in the regular season, López’s injury is a tough hit for the Braves, who are fighting for a playoff spot. The earliest possible return for López would be in the final week of the season.

“We won’t know much until the inflammation settles and he can resume throwing,” Snitker added. “But it wasn’t anything structural. Hopefully, after some rest, he can start his throwing program and be ready to return when his time’s up.”

Heading into the final game of a two-game series against the Nationals, the Braves trail the Mets by half a game for the NL’s final wild-card spot. The Mets extended their lead with a 6-2 victory over Toronto earlier in the day.

Atlanta has stayed in contention despite several key injuries this season, including season-ending setbacks to NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. and star pitcher Spencer Strider.
