Official Update: Marlins Secure Veteran Infielder as Ideal Replacement for…

The Miami Marlins announced today that they have selected the contract of infielder José Devers. Devers will replace Vidal Brujan on the active roster after Brujan was placed on the 10-day Injured List due to a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder. To accommodate Devers on the 40-man roster, the Marlins have designated left-handed pitcher Jonathan Bermudez for assignment.Devers, 24, is returning to the Marlins for his second stint at the major league level. He made his debut with Miami in 2021, posting a .244/.304/.317 slash line in 21 games. Although he remained on the 40-man roster the following year, he was designated for assignment during the 2022-23 offseason. Devers then signed a minor league deal to stay with the organization, but his performance at the Triple-A level this season has been modest, with a .239/.304/.362 slash line over 54 games, similar to his previous major league numbers.

Despite his underwhelming batting stats, Devers is seen as a valuable depth option capable of playing multiple infield positions, which is crucial for the Marlins following Brujan’s injury. Brujan, once a top prospect with the Rays, has been an important part of Miami’s bench, appearing at various positions including second base, third base, shortstop, and all three outfield spots. Although his offensive production has been limited, his versatility has made him a key contributor.

Devers is expected to take over as the Marlins’ primary shortstop while Brujan is sidelined, especially since Brujan had recently been covering for the injured Xavier Edwards at that position. The Marlins will likely use a combination of Devers and Otto Lopez at shortstop, with Lopez also seeing time at second base alongside David Hensley. This stretch of games provides Devers with an opportunity to prove his worth and secure a spot on the 40-man roster for the offseason or attract interest from other teams ahead of next year’s Spring Training.

As for Bermudez, the left-hander made his MLB debut with the Marlins just last week, allowing two runs on six hits, including a home run, across 3 2/3 innings while striking out three. Before his call-up, Bermudez had a mixed season in the minors, excelling with a 2.53 ERA in 14 Double-A starts but struggling in Triple-A with a 6.46 ERA. The Marlins will likely place Bermudez on waivers in the coming days. If he goes unclaimed, Bermudez can choose to reject an outright assignment and enter free agency.
