Leafs’ Booster Deal; Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving Has Secured The Commitment Of A Top Talented Star From…

Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving is open to exploring trade options, and a recent proposal suggests the team could acquire a promising young forward.

PuckPedia, a website offering a trade simulation tool called PuckGM, has seen fans proposing deals. One such suggestion involves the Maple Leafs acquiring Kaapo Kakko from the New York Rangers.

Proposed Trade:

  • Maple Leafs Receive: Kaapo Kakko
  • Rangers Receive: Nick Robertson, 2026 Third-Round Pick

The trade proposal features a swap of two talented but frustrated forwards, with the Maple Leafs adding a third-round pick to sweeten the deal.

Kakko, drafted second overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, has struggled to meet expectations. Despite signing a one-year, $2.4 million contract with the Rangers, he found himself a healthy scratch during both the regular season and playoffs. Last season, Kakko played in 61 games, tallying 13 goals and 6 assists for 19 points. Over his 300 NHL games, he has recorded 57 goals and 60 assists for a total of 117 points.

On the other side, Robertson, selected in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft, is currently a restricted free agent (RFA). He has expressed dissatisfaction with his role on the team and requested a trade, informing the Maple Leafs that he won’t re-sign. Last season, Robertson played 56 games, scoring 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points.

A trade could offer both players the fresh start they need to fully realize their potential in the NHL.

Robertson’s Trade Request Remains Firm

NHL insider Chris Johnston reported just before the July 1 free agency period that Robertson had formally requested a trade from the Maple Leafs. During an appearance on TSN1050’s OverDrive on August 26, Johnston confirmed that Robertson remains firm in his desire to move on.

“It’s kind of at a standstill right now. My understanding is Nick Robertson’s desire to move on hasn’t changed, but the fact remains he’s a restricted free agent with limited options. If he doesn’t want to sign a contract and the organization decides not to move him, he could try to apply pressure by sitting out. However, this would come at a personal cost, both in terms of getting up to speed in training camp and potentially missing games, as well as financially,” Johnston said.

With Robertson having skated in 87 NHL games, recording 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points, Treliving acknowledges that there is still a need for Robertson on the team. As Johnston mentioned, the Maple Leafs don’t have as much depth at left wing as in previous years, which could provide Robertson with a greater opportunity if he stays.

Kakko’s Frustration with the Rangers

Kakko was expected to be a key component of the Rangers’ core after being drafted second overall in 2019. However, his performance has been inconsistent, leading to his frustration, especially when he was benched during the playoffs.

“Of course, everyone wants to play. I was not happy being out of the lineup, but I still supported the team and hoped we would win so I could get another chance to play. But yes, I was frustrated, like anyone would be,” Kakko shared.

Despite his struggles, Kakko signed a one-year extension with the Rangers, though his name continues to surface in trade rumors. A move to a new team could provide the reset he needs to fulfill his potential.
