Breaking news: auburn tigers’ head Hugh Freeze unravels the criteria for auburn’s football season opener to considered a…

As Auburn prepares to kick off their football season against Alabama A&M, there are several critical factors that will determine whether the opener can be deemed a success. Here are five essential elements to watch for in week one.

1. Secure the Win

It might seem obvious, but after last year’s shocking loss to New Mexico State, some Auburn fans might be nervous about facing another underdog. However, there’s a significant difference between the two opponents. New Mexico State is an FBS school that went 10-5 and played in a bowl game last year, while Alabama A&M is an FCS team that finished 5-6. Auburn should win this game comfortably.

2. Avoid Injuries

For any head coach, the biggest concern when playing an overmatched team is the risk of injury to key players. The goal is to come out of the game with a healthy roster. The plan should be to start strong, build a solid lead, and then pull starters and key reserves to minimize the risk of injuries.

3. Give Multiple Players Game Time

Auburn has a number of talented freshmen that fans are eager to see on the field, including Cam Coleman, who is expected to start and make an immediate impact. Beyond the freshmen, other key reserves in positions like quarterback, defensive line, linebackers, and secondary need to get playing time. A big lead will allow the coaching staff to rotate players freely and provide valuable in-game experience.

4. Show Potential in the Pass Rush

One of the big questions heading into the season is whether Auburn can generate enough pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Players like edge rushers Jalen McLeod and Keyron Crawford, along with defensive ends Keldric Faulk and Amaris Williams, need to make their presence felt. Additionally, Demarcus Riddick is expected to play a key role in rushing the passer. Auburn needs to rack up multiple sacks to demonstrate that their pass rush is on track.

5. Achieve Offensive Balance

In previous matchups against Alabama A&M, Auburn has relied heavily on the run game, controlling the clock and limiting their passing game. This time, the Tigers need to focus on offensive balance. Quarterback Payton Thorne should use this game to build confidence with his new wide receivers, aiming for a more dynamic passing attack. Ideally, Auburn should aim for over 500 yards of total offense, with the passing game accounting for around 275 yards on 25-30 attempts, and the running game contributing over 250 yards.

These factors will be crucial in determining whether Auburn’s season opener is successful and sets the tone for the rest of the season.
