MLB Trade: MLB Has Projected Montgomery To Land A Six-Year, $150 Million Deal…

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Jordan Montgomery recently expressed his frustration with how his free agency was handled by agent Scott Boras. In an interview with the ‘Boston Herald’, Montgomery said, “I had a Zoom call with [the Red Sox], that’s really all I know. … Obviously, Boras kind of butchered it, so I’m just trying to move on from the offseason and try to forget it.”

Despite being heavily linked to Boston during the offseason, Montgomery signed a one-year, $25 million deal with the Diamondbacks on March 29, just after Opening Day, which meant he had to prepare without the benefit of spring training.

Following the signing, Montgomery switched agencies, leaving Boras for Wasserman. The 31-year-old pitcher has a player option for 2025, valued at $22.5 million.

Projections for Montgomery’s contract varied widely, with MLB Trade Rumors estimating a six-year, $150 million deal, while ‘The Athletic’ predicted a five-year, $127 million contract.

Montgomery entered free agency after a strong season, posting a 3.20 ERA over 32 starts with the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers, and winning his first World Series. However, this season has been challenging, with a 6.44 ERA in 19 starts.

Due to his struggles, the Diamondbacks recently moved Montgomery to the bullpen, as Ryne Nelson outperformed him and secured the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Montgomery was among several Boras clients, including Blake Snell, Matt Chapman, Cody Bellinger, and J.D. Martinez, who signed short-term deals late in the offseason or during the season.
