College Football Analyst Shares Exciting Update About the Vols That Quickly Gains Attention… Losing the top commitment in a recruiting class is tough, and that’s exactly what happened to Michigan football on Friday.

Nate Marshall, a highly-touted 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive lineman from Illinois, who was ranked No. 49 overall, switched his commitment from Michigan to Auburn.

Auburn had previously tried to flip Marshall earlier in the recruitment process, but Michigan managed to retain his commitment temporarily. The exact reasons for the switch are unclear. Marshall had visited Michigan over the summer after committing in the spring and had stated he was firm in his decision.

Michigan’s recruitment of Jaylen Williams seemed to solidify their position, making Marshall’s decommitment a surprise. While surprises are common in recruiting, this one was unexpected just a few days ago.

Thoughts on Nate Marshall’s Decommitment from Michigan Football

The silver lining for Michigan football is that they already have three defensive line prospects committed for the 2025 class. This includes two four-star EDGE prospects and three-star defensive lineman Bobby Kanka.

Williams, who is a hybrid EDGE/DL like Marshall, helps soften the blow of this decommitment. He’s ranked No. 243 overall in the 2025 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings and has tremendous potential, reminiscent of Mike Morris.

According to Allen Trieu of 247 Sports, there are still plenty of defensive line prospects for Michigan to target, so it’s likely that the recruiting board will expand in the coming weeks.

As a result of Marshall’s decommitment, Michigan’s team ranking dropped to 14th in the 247 Sports team rankings. The Wolverines currently have 16 commitments, 12 of which are blue-chip prospects, giving them a 75 percent blue-chip ratio in the 2025 class.
