Breaking News: Craig Berube Execute A Contract Of $9.6-Million Deal For The Acquisition Of A 27-Year Magnificent Captain…

The Toronto Maple Leafs are still in search of additional talent for their forward lineup, and a new trade proposal could be the answer. According to PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, a fan-generated trade scenario suggests that the Maple Leafs could acquire Mikael Backlund, the Calgary Flames’ captain, in a multi-player exchange.

This proposed trade is appealing for Toronto, as it would bring in a seasoned forward who could strengthen their middle-six lineup. In return, the Maple Leafs would part ways with defenseman Timothy Liljegren, who has struggled to secure a regular spot on the team, and David Kämpf, who has also been discussed as a potential trade candidate.

Backlund, who has spent his entire NHL career with the Flames, is entering the first year of a two-year, $9 million contract. At 35 years old, the Swedish center could potentially serve as Toronto’s third-line center, adding depth and scoring ability to their roster.

During the last season, Backlund played in all 82 games, contributing 15 goals and 24 assists, totaling 39 points. Over his extensive NHL career, he has accumulated 200 goals and 331 assists across 990 games.

For the Flames, the trade would be particularly valuable due to the inclusion of a second-round draft pick and Liljegren, a former first-round pick. Liljegren recently signed a two-year, $6 million extension with the Maple Leafs but has yet to establish himself as a regular NHL defenseman, having played 55 games last season with 3 goals and 20 assists.

Backlund Named Flames Captain Before the 2023 Season

Ahead of the 2023-24 NHL season, Backlund not only signed his two-year extension but was also named captain of the Flames, a role he has unofficially filled for some time.

“It’s surreal and a very proud moment,” Backlund shared. “There’s been a lot of talk about it, but it’s just a very exciting time. I’m honored to wear the captaincy, especially in a Canadian city like Calgary.”

Flames general manager Craig Conroy praised Backlund’s leadership, stating, “Mikael Backlund is our captain. We’re thrilled to extend him for two more seasons and officially recognize him as our captain. We look forward to his continued leadership on and off the ice.”

Calgary will kick off its 2024-25 NHL season on October 9th, facing the Vancouver Canucks on the road.

Maple Leafs’ Offseason Moves: More to Come?

The Maple Leafs have had a relatively quiet offseason, making a few key signings such as Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson to strengthen their defense, and adding Anthony Stolarz as a goaltender to partner with Joseph Woll.

Despite these moves, Toronto’s general manager Brad Treliving hasn’t ruled out further additions before the season begins. “We’re always looking at ways to make our team better,” Treliving said on TSN 1050’s OverDrive. “Sometimes big changes are necessary, but they have to be the right ones. We’re not just making moves for the sake of it.”

With training camps opening in September, there is still time for the Maple Leafs to make impactful additions to their roster, particularly among their forwards
