In a conversation with TSN’s Bryan Hayes and Dave Feschuk, Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell shed some light on Laine’s trade request. According to Waddell, Laine expressed his desire for a trade before Waddell took over as GM in May, hinting at underlying issues in the locker room. Waddell has been in talks with several teams, with two or three currently showing interest, but admits that Laine’s cap hit has made finding a trade partner challenging.

If no trade materializes, Waddell told Laine’s agent that the winger must return to the Blue Jackets for training camp. He emphasized that the team would welcome him back and work to make the best of the situation. Sportsnet reported that Waddell has given Laine’s agent permission to negotiate with other clubs, but Waddell remains firm that he won’t make a trade unless the return is right for the Blue Jackets. So far, no suitable offers have emerged.

Jason Newland of The Hockey News mentioned that a deal might not be possible until later in the season, perhaps around Christmas, depending on whether Laine can rediscover his scoring form with the Blue Jackets. Adam Proteau added that it would be in Laine’s best interest to perform at his highest level to facilitate a trade. The situation could drag on until the March trade deadline if the right offer doesn’t come along sooner.
