Hugh’s Perfect Move; Tigers Head Coach Hugh Freeze Acquired A 27-Year Old Spectacular Weapon In A $5.3-Million Deal…

Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze has made a significant decision regarding the team’s quarterback depth chart. Redshirt freshman Hank Brown has been officially named the backup to starting quarterback Payton Thorne, as announced by Freeze on the August 19 episode of Tiger Talk. This decision leaves third-year quarterback Holden Geriner in an uncertain position, while promising newcomer Walker White seems likely to take a redshirt season, similar to Brown’s experience in 2023.

Thorne, who has earned Freeze’s trust for the second consecutive year, remains the starting quarterback. However, Freeze hinted at the possibility of a quarterback competition during the offseason, particularly after Brown’s impressive performance in the Music City Bowl against Maryland. In that game, Brown completed seven of nine passes, igniting hope among Auburn fans who braved the cold December night in Nashville to witness the Tigers’ 31-13 victory.

As the season progresses, Brown’s Music City Bowl performance will undoubtedly be remembered if Thorne falters. Brown is expected to get his first showcase of the season in the Tigers’ Week 1 matchup against Alabama A&M, likely appearing in the second half if Auburn secures a comfortable lead. However, if Auburn finds itself needing a change under center, it could spell the end of Thorne’s tenure as the starting quarterback—a scenario no one wants to dwell on.

Cas successfully utilized Harsin-era running backs like Jarquez Hunter and Damari Alston, the quarterback position requires a different level of adaptability, and Geriner may not fit into Freeze’s long-term plans.

Looking ahead, Auburn’s quarterback situation could undergo further changes by 2025. If the right transfer quarterback becomes available, Freeze may be tempted to invest in a high-profile acquisition, potentially creating even more competition for both Brown and White.

For now, it appears that Geriner has been outmatched by Brown on the depth chart, and one can only wonder if another program might offer him the playing time he’s unlikely to find at Auburn.
