The New York Yankees have faced a significant setback, losing a key trade deadline acquisition to a rival team through an unexpected waiver claim. The Yankees recently lost right-handed pitcher Enyel De Los Santos, who was claimed by the Chicago White Sox shortly after being acquired.
De Los Santos’ time with the Yankees was brief, marked by a challenging debut in Monday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox. Called upon to manage a strained bullpen, De Los Santos entered the game with the Yankees trailing 5-2. Unfortunately, his outing did not go as planned, as he allowed seven runs, contributing to a lopsided loss against a team with 90 defeats.
Despite remaining with the team the next day, De Los Santos was placed on waivers by Wednesday afternoon to make room for Will Warren, the Yankees’ starting pitcher that night. Some fans hoped that De Los Santos might clear waivers and offer some value later on, potentially salvaging one of Brian Cashman’s deadline moves.
However, the White Sox, the very team that had battered De Los Santos just days before, claimed him to replace their own injured right-hander, Dominic Leone, who had recently been placed on the 60-day injured list.
In his brief stint with the Yankees, De Los Santos posted a disappointing 14.21 ERA over 6 1/3 innings in five appearances. The failed acquisition highlights the Yankees’ ongoing struggles to address their bullpen issues effectively. Cashman’s trade moves, already under scrutiny, now appear even more questionable as one of his key additions quickly departed for a rival team.
Perhaps this situation will prompt the Yankees to reconsider their strategy, possibly even adopting the approach of signing players they’ve recently faced in hopes of turning their fortunes around. But for now, the Yankees are left to deal with the fallout of losing a potentially valuable asset to a team that just handed them a tough loss.
