Official Update: Jim Montgomery Confirms Three X-Factors In 2024-25…

As the dust settles and hockey season approaches, there’s plenty of excitement surrounding the Boston Bruins and their new roster additions for the 2024-25 season. Every team has its X-factors—those players who can make a significant impact. Here are three players who could be crucial for the Bruins’ success this season.

Joonas Korpisalo

At first glance, it might seem odd to label a backup goalie as an X-factor, but in today’s NHL, having two reliable netminders is invaluable. We’ve seen how teams like the New York Rangers and New York Islanders benefited from having strong backup goaltenders like Jonathan Quick and Semyon Varlamov. Similarly, the Bruins have enjoyed success in recent years with their own tandem of Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark.

With Ullmark now gone, Joonas Korpisalo will need to step up. While Swayman has shown he can be a top-tier goaltender, the Bruins will need to avoid overworking him throughout the season. Korpisalo’s ability to deliver solid performances when called upon will be crucial to ensuring Swayman stays fresh, especially as the team gears up for a potential playoff run.

Korpisalo is coming off a challenging season, where he posted a 3.27 goals-against average (GAA) and a .890 save percentage (SV%), along with a negative-16.1 goals saved above expected (GSAx), which was among the worst in the league. However, if he can bounce back and provide reliable backup support, he could be a game-changer for the Bruins during the regular season.

Elias Lindholm

Elias Lindholm might be the biggest X-factor for the Bruins in the 2024-25 season. With general manager Don Sweeney looking to bolster the team’s center depth, Lindholm was a key acquisition. While Pavel Zacha has been effective for the Bruins, he’s better suited for the wing, leaving Lindholm to take over as the top-line center.

Lindholm will be anchoring the top line, flanked by David Pastrnak and Zacha. He hasn’t had elite linemates since his breakout 2021-22 season with the Calgary Flames, but now he’ll be playing alongside one of the NHL’s top goal scorers in Pastrnak. Beyond his offensive production, Lindholm brings a lot to the table in terms of the “little things”—like his faceoff ability.

The Bruins struggled in the faceoff circle during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but Lindholm’s career 54.6% faceoff win percentage could provide a significant boost. This not only helps in crucial defensive zone draws but also aids the Bruins in controlling possession. Last season, the Bruins ranked 24th in Corsi For percentage (CF%) at 47.49, indicating they were often outshot and outplayed at five-on-five. Lindholm’s presence could help turn the tide in those situations.

Additionally, Lindholm is expected to play a key role on the penalty kill and bring a strong defensive presence, making him a perfect fit for the Bruins’ lineup.

Matthew Poitras

Matthew Poitras was a pleasant surprise when he made the Bruins’ roster out of training camp in the 2023-24 season. With a positive attitude and impressive play, Poitras earned his spot and made an immediate impact.

Poitras showed strong on-ice performance, with the Bruins maintaining even puck possession and an advantage in shots on goal when he was on the ice. His positive expected goals-for percentage and goal differential also highlight his effectiveness, particularly in generating scoring chances in high-danger areas.

Despite having his season cut short by a shoulder injury, Poitras managed to score five goals and 15 points in 33 games, boasting a 12.5% shooting percentage. Heading into the 2024-25 season, he has added muscle, which could be crucial for his development.

With the Bruins boasting a deeper roster this season, Poitras could elevate the team’s secondary scoring and provide valuable depth. A healthy Poitras could easily reach the 30 to 40-point mark by the end of the season, making him a vital contributor.

Bruins’ X-Factors Could Propel the Team

These three players—Korpisalo, Lindholm, and Poitras—could play crucial roles in the Bruins’ success this season. While stars like Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, and Charlie Coyle are known quantities, the performance of these potential X-factors could make the difference between a good season and a great one. If Korpisalo can form a solid goaltending tandem, Lindholm thrives as a top-line center, and Poitras continues to develop, the Bruins could be among the best teams in the Eastern Conference.
