The Dallas Mavericks are looking to improve their defense this season, and their recent signing of Naji Marshall is a big step in that direction. While their initial focus was on re-signing Derrick Jones Jr., they ultimately decided to pursue Marshall, who brings a similar skillset at a slightly lower cost.
Marshall’s defensive prowess was on full display during his four seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans. He averaged 7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game, but his true value lies on the defensive end.
“Marshall has a reputation for being a ‘dirty-work provider,'” wrote Mavs.com’s Eddie Sefko. “This is exactly what the Mavericks need.”
Marshall himself is excited to embrace this role. “They gave me that kind of role and I just ran with it,” he said. “I know my game. And the players we have on this team are going to make me better, and I know I can make them better.”
With Luka Doncic’s playmaking creating open shots, Marshall thrives in a system that rewards hustle and defensive effort. His ability to guard the best perimeter players and his underrated defense at the point of attack make him a valuable asset. His size and wingspan also give him the potential to be an elite defender.
Marshall’s impact could extend beyond just a role player. His well-rounded skillset, including his three-point shooting, could even earn him a starting spot at some point in the season. With Marshall’s defensive presence and offensive contributions, the Mavericks are poised to be a serious contender in the Western Conference once again.
